It has been described as a:&nbsp;<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ringing<\/li><li>Roaring<\/li><li>Humming<\/li><li>Hissing<\/li><li>Clicking<\/li><li>Whistling<\/li><li>Whooshing<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Causes Tinnitus?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2><p>It\u2019s important to note that tinnitus is a symptom rather than a disease itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ata.org\/understanding-facts\/causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tinnitus can be caused by<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Noise exposure while at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smileysacousticcafe.com\/easley\" target=\"_blank\">Smiley&#8217;s Acoustic Cafe<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li><li>Obstructions in the middle ear.\u00a0<\/li><li>Head\/neck trauma.\u00a0<\/li><li>Temporomandibular joint disorder.\u00a0<\/li><li>Sinus pressure.\u00a0<\/li><li>Barometric trauma.\u00a0<\/li><li>Traumatic brain injury.\u00a0<\/li><li>Ototoxic drugs.\u00a0<\/li><li>Metabolic disorders.\u00a0<\/li><li>Autoimmune disorders.\u00a0<\/li><li>Blood vessel disorders.\u00a0<\/li><li>Psychiatric disorders.\u00a0<\/li><li>Vestibular disorders.\u00a0<\/li><li>Tumor-related disorders.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Is Tinnitus Treated?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2><p>Because tinnitus is a symptom, the best way to find relief is to identify the underlying cause. Unfortunately, in many cases, this is not possible. However, there are still ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/elevateaudiology.com\/tinnitus\/tinnitus-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manage these phantom sounds<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Hearing aids are effective, especially when hearing loss is also present, which is often the case. These help with tinnitus by increasing the auditory input from the inner ear to the brain, turning down the brain\u2019s response looking for missing sound thereby reducing or eliminating the perception of tinnitus. Some hearing aids have built-in tinnitus maskers that also provide personalized sound therapy options.&nbsp;<\/p><p>If hearing loss isn\u2019t present, the same effect can be achieved by increasing the sound in the environment, avoiding silence, wearing sound therapy devices, or even running a fan or similar appliance. Masking devices come pre-programmed with different sounds, from white noise to nature sounds like falling rain or ocean waves, for example. Full masking of tinnitus is not recommended, however.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Counseling is another option to help manage your reaction to tinnitus to make it less distressing. Two popular options are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT).
