Why Professional Earwax Removal Matters

Earwax (cerumen) is your ear’s natural defense system. It traps dust and debris, moisturizes the ear canal, and helps protect against infection. For most people, earwax works its way out on its own. But when it builds up or gets pushed deeper into the canal, it can muffle hearing, cause discomfort, ringing, dizziness, or even temporary hearing loss — and it can damage hearing aids.

At-home cleaning kits, cotton swabs, ear candles, and irrigation bulbs often make impactions worse. They can scrape the canal, push wax further in, or perforate the eardrum. The safest way to address an earwax problem is to have a trained provider take a look.

How We Remove Earwax at Elevate Audiology

Our Doctors of Audiology perform earwax removal in-office using video otoscopy and the technique best suited to your ear canal anatomy and the type of wax we see. Options include:

  • Curettage — gentle removal with a small, lighted instrument under direct visualization.
  • Suction — low-pressure microsuction that pulls wax out without flushing the canal.
  • Irrigation — controlled, lukewarm-water lavage when the wax is soft and the eardrum is healthy.

We always start by looking inside both ears, talking through what we see, and explaining the plan before we begin. If we discover something that warrants a referral — an active infection, a perforation, or another medical concern — we’ll get you to the right provider quickly.

Professional earwax removal in Easley and Greenville

If clogged ears, muffled hearing, or hearing-aid feedback may be caused by earwax, Elevate Audiology can check your ears and recommend the safest next step. Our Doctors of Audiology provide in-office earwax care for patients at both the Easley office and the Greenville office. We look inside the ear before treatment, explain the options, and share care instructions after the visit. Schedule an earwax check to get started.

When to Schedule

Consider an earwax check if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • A sudden change in hearing or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Ringing, buzzing, or whistling that wasn’t there before
  • Itching, drainage, or an odor
  • Dizziness or off-balance feelings
  • Hearing aids that suddenly sound weak, distorted, or whistle more than usual

Hearing-aid wearers benefit from regular earwax checks because cerumen is the most common cause of hearing-aid breakdowns and reduced sound quality. We can typically address routine wax management as part of your hearing-aid follow-up visits.

What to Expect

Most earwax-removal appointments take 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll see clear before-and-after images of your ear canal, you’ll know exactly what we did, and you’ll leave with care instructions tailored to your ears. If your wax tends to build up quickly, we’ll talk through a maintenance plan so it doesn’t become a recurring problem.

Earwax removal FAQs

Is it safe to remove earwax at home?

It depends on your ears, and that is exactly the problem with doing it yourself. If you have ear pain, drainage, a history of ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or sudden changes in hearing, home removal is not safe. Even when none of those are present, most at-home methods move wax around more than they remove it. A professional visit usually takes less than 15 minutes and eliminates the guesswork entirely.

Should I use cotton swabs?

No. Cotton swabs are one of the most common causes of impacted earwax. They push wax deeper into the canal rather than removing it, which can make pressure, fullness, and muffled hearing significantly worse. If you are reaching for a swab because your ears feel blocked, that is a sign it is time to come in.

How do you remove earwax at Elevate Audiology?

We start by looking in your ears with an otoscope (you can ask to see in your own ears, too!) so you can see exactly what we see. From there, we use the method best suited to your ear canal and the type of wax present. That may include gentle microsuction, small instruments, or irrigation when appropriate. Everything is done with precision and care by a trained clinician, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

How long does an earwax removal visit take?

Most visits are completed in under 15 minutes. If wax is particularly deep or hardened, it may take a little longer. Either way, most patients leave the same day feeling immediate relief.

When should I schedule an appointment?

If your ears feel full, your hearing sounds muffled, your hearing aids are whistling more than usual, or you have ringing that came on recently, earwax could be the cause. Do not wait it out. Wax does not resolve on its own once it is impacted, and the longer it sits, the harder it becomes to remove comfortably. Scheduling is quick and most visits are same-week.
